Dr. Angel Valchinov is at the forefront of the violin world. “His Beethoven Concerto is stellar. Performed the only way it should be played”; “A Dvorak Concerto that was incredibly beautiful. One of a kind.” Aaron Rosand called him a “splendid performer, with rare sensitivity and breath of interpretation”. “His Bach recording is incredible”, Naoko Tanaka has asserted. These are only a few of many words used by top professionals to portray Angel’s artistry.
In command of the violin's vast repertoire, Angel has performed as soloist with outstanding orchestras, such as the Boston Civic Symphony, Idyllwild Arts Academy Chamber Orchestra with conductor Ransom Wilson, the Plovdiv Philharmonic in his native Bulgaria, the Gold Country Chamber Orchestra and the Pacific Union College Symphony in California, the Claflin Hill Symphony in Massachusetts and many others. Angel has held solo recitals in Boston, Miami, Idyllwild, California, and over Plovdiv State Radio in Bulgaria. Recently, he performed the extremely difficult Six Polyphonic Etudes By H.W. Ernst in a single recital evening. In addition, he is a member of the nationally acclaimed Boston String Quartet - a champion of contemporary music.
When he was only nine years old, he won Second Prize at Bulgaria’s most prestigious competition: “The Competition for Instrumentalists and Singers in Provadia”. Ever since then he has never stopped conquering new heights. In 2000, Angel was a semi-finalist at the “Vaclav Huml” International Violin Competition in Zagreb, Croatia, and won First Prize at the California Young Artist Competition (at Idyllwild) and the Temecula Young Artist Competition. In addition, he has won the Concerto Competitions at both the Idyllwild Arts Academy and the Harid Conservatory, as well as placing in the semi-finals at the renowned Spotlight Competition in Los Angeles. For five years Angel has received full scholarships and fellowships at the Aspen Music Festival, (where he has performed under such conductors as Neville Marriner and David Zinman), as well as full scholarships at the Texas Music Festival and the Bowdoin Music Festival.
A superb concertmaster, he is currently at this post at the Claflin Hill Symphony in Massachusetts and was concertmaster of the Boston Civic Symphony for four years. In addition, he is a concertmaster of several other orchestras in the Boston area and is an orchestra contractor in high demand. He has also been a concertmaster for the Aspen Music Festival Concert Orchestra which made the American premiere of the opera “Gloria: a Pig’s Tale”, by H.K. Gruber, which performance received a positive review in the New York Times. Angel has received grants from the Leni Fe Bland Foundation, Doris Kovner (for Aspen), Marie Iandoli (for Boston University) and has had master classes with Gil Shaham, Midori, Pamela Frank, and Joseph Silverstein, among many others.
He began his formal violin studies at the Plovdiv Music School, Bulgaria, with Tatiana Krasteva. In 1996 he came to the USA to study at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California with Todor Pelev. While at Idyllwild he was honored as Best Scholar in 10th Grade and received the Most Distinguished Arts Student Award (an award given to only one senior every year). After graduation in 1999, he studied at the Harid Conservatory earning his Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, graduating with three honors: the Award for Excellence in Violin Playing, the Most Outstanding Chamber Musician award, and the distinction cum laude. In 2001 he was included in the Dean's List.
In 2005 Angel earned his Master’s Degree from Boston University, and in 2009 completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Violin Performance, at the same school, studying with Yuri Mazurkevitch. His teachers also include Naoko Tanaka (assistant to the late legendary Dorothy DeLay of Juilliard), Alexander Kerr (former Concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebow Orchestra of Amsterdam), and the renowned Aaron Rosand (soloist, and professor at the Curtis Institute).
